In 1885 Hansen studied at Kunstnernes Frie Studieskoler in Copenhagen where his teacher was the painter Peder Severin Krøyer.
He became greatly influenced in his work by Krøyer’s French style of painting with use of bright light and strong colours.
Hansen conducted long study-trips abroad and the first was in 1887-88 to Berlin, Vienna, Budapest, Varna by the Black Sea,
Athens, Rhodes, Cyprus, Constantinople, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine and Egypt. He returned via Naples, Rome, Florence and Switzerland.
The second trip in 1889 to 1890 was to Madeira, Argentina (Buenos Aires) and Paraguay. He did many sketches and drawings during his trips
which he later used for his paintings. He finally settled in Esbjerg in 1891 where he taught drawing at the State School.
Hansen was also the principal of the Esbjerg Technical School for 25 years. Hansen painted the altar piece in Næsbjerg Church,
